The Ultimate Hawaii Trip Itinerary: One Week in Paradise

Hawaii had been on our travel bucket list for a while, and in October 2022, we finally made it happen! We spent an unforgettable week exploring Oahu, soaking up the sun, indulging in incredible food, and experiencing some of the most breathtaking landscapes. If you’re planning your own Hawaiian getaway, here’s a breakdown of our trip with recommendations on what to do, see, and eat!

Day 1: Travel Day & Arrival in Honolulu

We started our journey early, flying from Tampa (TPA) to Los Angeles (LAX) before catching an evening flight to Honolulu (HNL). After a long travel day, we checked into The Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations in Waikiki, our home for the week. It was the perfect spot—central to everything with easy beach access!

Day 2: Relax & Unwind in Waikiki

To ease into vacation mode, we spent the day stocking up on groceries for the week and lounging by the pool and beach. Waikiki Beach is famous for its golden sands and iconic Diamond Head views, making it the perfect place to unwind.

Tip: If you’re staying in a condo-style hotel, picking up groceries is a great way to save on food costs while still enjoying fresh, local eats.

Day 3: Adventure in the Rainforest & Mopeds in Waikiki

We kicked off our first adventure-packed day with a rainforest, waterfall, and movie scene tour in the morning. This was a must-do, as we got to explore lush jungles, see famous film locations, and take in the beauty of Oahu’s waterfalls.

In the afternoon, we rented mopeds to explore the Waikiki area at our own pace. Riding along the coast with the wind in our hair was such a fun way to experience the city! We wrapped up the day with a nice dinner and some much-needed rest.

Day 4: Lighthouse Hike & Sunset Catamaran Sail

Our morning started with a scenic lighthouse hike, offering stunning ocean views. The early morning start was worth it for the peaceful trail and breathtaking lookout points.

Later in the day, we boarded a sunset catamaran sail with an open bar—a definite highlight of the trip! There’s nothing quite like watching the Hawaiian sunset from the water with a Mai Tai in hand.

Day 5: All-Day Circle Island Tour

We dedicated this day to a circle island tour, which gave us a chance to see some of Oahu’s most iconic spots. The itinerary included:

  • The Dole Plantation (pineapple heaven!)
  • Sightseeing stops at some of Oahu’s most beautiful coastal viewpoints
  • A visit to a local coffee farm
  • Snorkeling at a picturesque beach (definitely bring a change of clothes!)

We wrapped up the evening with dinner at RumFire, an oceanfront restaurant with incredible cocktails and views.

Day 6: Exploring by Car, ATV Adventure & Luau

We picked up a rental car early in the morning and started the day with a delicious breakfast at Orchids. Then, it was time for an adrenaline rush with an ATV tour through rugged trails!

The evening was all about Hawaiian culture. We attended a traditional luau at Sea Life Park, where we enjoyed a feast of island dishes, live entertainment, and even learned a little hula!

Tip: Arrive early to explore Sea Life Park—the ticket includes admission for a full week.

Day 7: Kualoa Ranch & North Shore Adventures

Our day began with a boat tour at Kualoa Ranch, a breathtaking location famous for being the filming site of Jurassic Park. Then, we explored the North Shore, making stops at:

  • Waimea Valley Falls (a lush botanical garden with a swimmable waterfall)
  • Nu’uanu Valley (stunning landscapes and history)
  • Polynesian Cultural Center (a great way to learn about Hawaiian heritage!)

Day 8: Diamond Head Hike & Pearl Harbor

We got an early start for the Diamond Head hike, which offers some of the best panoramic views of Honolulu. If you love a good sunrise hike, this one is worth it!

In the afternoon, we visited Pearl Harbor, where we explored:

  • The USS Arizona Memorial
  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum
  • Battleship Missouri Memorial
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

For our last night in Oahu, we treated ourselves to an upscale dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse, a must-visit for steak lovers!

Day 9: Leisure Day & Shopping

We kept our last full day in Hawaii low-key, spending time at local farmers’ markets and doing some last-minute shopping for souvenirs. Then, it was time to pack up for our flight to California before heading home.

Bonus Food & Drink Recommendations

Hawaii is a foodie’s paradise! Some of our favorite food spots included:

  • Ono Seafood – Hands down, the best poke we had on the island!
  • Foodland Farms – Great for fresh local produce and snacks.
  • Skull & Crown Trading Co. – A speakeasy-style bar in Chinatown with amazing cocktails.

Final Thoughts

Our week in Oahu was filled with adventure, relaxation, and memories we’ll cherish forever. Whether you're looking for inspiration for a similar trip or planning your own Hawaiian getaway, Hawaii truly offers something for everyone. John and I are already excited about returning this September for another week-long adventure, this time visiting Bre and Blayne, who now call the island home. We’re also bringing along some of our closest friends, ensuring this trip will be extra special with the people we love. The memories we’ll create together are bound to be unforgettable! Before heading to Oahu, John and I will take a detour to California to celebrate our birthdays just the two of us.
