Why Savannah Should Be Your Next Getaway
Let's Explore Savannah, Georgia!

John and I first visited Savannah during a road trip to the Carolinas in 2022. We only spent about 24 hours there, but it completely stole our hearts. Between the charming historic streets, the beautiful oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and the city's relaxed Southern atmosphere, we knew one day wasn't enough. Ever since that first visit, we've been talking about going back.
This Memorial Day weekend, we finally returned for a longer stay, and Savannah was every bit as magical as we remembered. From strolling through the historic squares and exploring River Street to enjoying incredible food and soaking in the city's timeless charm, it felt like stepping into another era. It's easy to see why Savannah is considered one of the most beautiful and beloved cities in the South.
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, girls' trip, or long weekend escape, this 3-day Savannah itinerary covers everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

Savannah is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is known for its historic district, stunning parks, walkable streets, and Southern hospitality. It's the perfect destination if you love history, architecture, great food, and picturesque photo spots. Oh, and endless options of rooftop bars don't hurt.
Some of my favorite things about Savannah include:
- The beautiful historic squares
- Forsyth Park
- Incredible restaurants and rooftop bars
- Walkability
- Unique boutiques and local shops
- Gorgeous Southern architecture
- A laid-back atmosphere
Day 1: Arrive and Explore Historic Savannah
After arriving in Savannah, check into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the Historic District.
One of the best things about Savannah is that you can simply wander and discover beautiful streets, hidden squares, and charming homes around every corner.
Visit Forsyth Park
No trip to Savannah is complete without visiting Forsyth Park. The iconic white fountain is one of the most photographed landmarks in the city and the perfect place to begin your weekend.
Take time to stroll beneath the oak trees draped in Spanish moss and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Walk Through the Historic Squares
Savannah is famous for its 22 historic squares. As you wander through the city, you'll find each square has its own personality, monuments, and beautiful landscaping.
Some favorites include:
- Chippewa Square
- Monterey Square
- Madison Square
- Wright Square
Dinner in the Historic District
Spend your first evening enjoying Savannah's incredible food scene.
Popular restaurants include:
- The Olde Pink House
- Vic's on the River
- Husk Savannah
- Treylor Park
After getting a recommendation from a local, John and I headed to Sorry Charlie's Oyster Bar for dinner—and wow, it did not disappoint. This place was easily an 11/10. The atmosphere was fun and lively, the drinks were fantastic, and the food was some of the best we had all weekend. We split a dozen oysters, an order of hush puppies, and the fish tacos, and every bite was incredible. It's one of those places that we would absolutely return to on our next trip to Savannah.
After dinner, take an evening stroll through the historic streets as the city lights begin to glow. We decided to have any early night so we could enjoy the next couple of days in Savannah.
Day 2: Savannah's Best Sights and Food
Start with Breakfast
Grab coffee and breakfast from a local café before heading out for a full day of sightseeing. I woke up and walked to a local coffee shop near our hotel called Foxtail Coffee Co. It ended up being my coffee spot every morning we were in town. The coffee was amazing, affordable and the staff was so incredibly kind! I got a different type of coffee every morning so I could try different syrups and flavors.
Savannah has no shortage of charming coffee shops and bakeries. If we had more time I would've drank my way through all of them.
Explore River Street
River Street is one of Savannah's most popular attractions.
Located along the Savannah River, this historic waterfront area features:
- Shops and boutiques
- Restaurants
- Rooftop bars
- Historic buildings
- River views
John and I spent much of the afternoon wandering through Savannah's beautiful historic squares and parks as we made our way toward River Street. One of the things I love most about Savannah is that there's no need to rush—some of our favorite moments came from simply strolling beneath the moss-covered oak trees and taking in the city's charm.
We began our River Street exploration at the Savannah River Street Market Place, where local artists and makers showcase their work. One piece immediately caught our eye: a beautifully handcrafted wooden world map complete with pins to mark your travels. As avid travelers, we absolutely fell in love with it and have already decided we'll be ordering one for our future speakeasy-inspired bonus room renovation. It's those unique local finds that make exploring Savannah so special.
Take a Historic Walking Tour
One of the best ways to learn about Savannah's history is through a guided walking tour.
You'll discover:
- Historic homes
- Hidden courtyards
- Local legends
- Architectural highlights
- Stories from Savannah's past
Sunset Drinks and Dinner
For our second night in Savannah, we grabbed dinner at Savannah Seafood Shack and it was exactly what we were craving after a day of exploring. We shared a seafood boil loaded with fresh seafood and a fish po' boy, both of which were delicious and packed with flavor.
After dinner, we decided to experience Savannah's nightlife and check out some of the city's famous rooftop bars. We started at Electric Moon Rooftop Bar, and it quickly became one of the highlights of the evening. The atmosphere was so much fun, with great views overlooking the river and a lively crowd. One thing that surprised me about Savannah was just how many rooftop bars are tucked along River Street. We ended up hopping between a few spots, enjoying the views, cocktails, and energy of the city as the sun went down.
Grab a cocktail after dinner and enjoy watching the sunset over the city!
Day 3: Brunch and Final Exploring
Southern Brunch
Before heading home, be sure to treat yourself to a Southern-style breakfast or brunch. Savannah is known for its incredible comfort food, and there's no better way to start your morning than with a fresh, buttery biscuit packed with Southern flavors.
John and I stopped at Rise Southern Biscuits for a quick breakfast before hitting the road, and it ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip. I ordered the Hot Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit, and it was absolutely incredible. The combination of crispy chicken, sweet honey butter, and a perfectly flaky biscuit was unforgettable. If you're a biscuit lover, this is a spot you won't want to miss while visiting Savannah.
Visit Bonaventure Cemetery
If you have extra time during your visit, consider stopping by Bonaventure Cemetery. While visiting a cemetery may not be on everyone's travel itinerary, it's actually one of Savannah's most beautiful and historic landmarks. Known for its towering oak trees draped in Spanish moss, intricate sculptures, and peaceful atmosphere, it's often considered one of the most picturesque cemeteries in the United States.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to fit it into our schedule this trip, even though it was high on our list. We had hoped to at least drive through and explore the grounds, but we'll definitely be making time for it on our next visit to Savannah.
Last Walk Through Savannah
Spend your final few hours revisiting your favorite streets, taking photos, and soaking in the city's charm before heading home.
Where We Stayed
Savannah offers accommodations for every budget, from boutique hotels in the Historic District to luxury properties and charming inns.
For first-time visitors, I highly recommend staying in or near Savannah's Historic District. Being within walking distance of the city's top attractions made our trip so much more enjoyable and allowed us to truly soak in Savannah's charm without constantly worrying about transportation or parking.
John and I stayed at The Bluff Hotel Historic Savannah, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, and I can't recommend it enough. The location was fantastic—just a short walk from River Street and many of the city's most popular sights. The hotel was clean, spacious, and beautifully maintained, and the staff went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We were even surprised with a complimentary room upgrade, which made the experience even better. Between the comfortable accommodations, excellent service, and convenient location, it was the perfect home base for our Savannah weekend getaway.

What I love most about Savannah is that there's no pressure to have a packed itinerary.
