Key West Travel Guide: Unforgettable Experiences, Dining, and Attractions

Key West, Florida, is a tropical paradise that offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. As someone who visits multiple times a year and has explored its many offerings, I’m excited to share my top recommendations for making the most out of your trip. From must-see attractions to the best places to eat and drink, here's your ultimate guide to Key West.

Things to Do

Butterfly Museum

Start your journey with a visit to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. It's a serene oasis filled with hundreds of butterflies, exotic birds, and beautiful plants. It’s perfect for a relaxing and visually stunning experience.

Walk Duval Street During the Day

Duval Street is the heart of Key West. During the day, stroll along this bustling street, exploring its eclectic mix of shops, galleries, and cafes. It’s the perfect place to pick up souvenirs or just people-watch. If you know us, you know that John and I love to collect tons of mementos, keepsakes, and tokens of remembrance from our trips. Well that is easy to do in Key West. We have bought some of the most precious Christmas ornaments (like our mahi-mahi fish, our lobster for mini season, and our sail boat). You can find tons of beautiful art, hand painted pieces, ornaments, shot glasses, and post cards. There is defiantly something for everyone.

Bar Hop on Duval Street at Night

When the sun sets, Duval Street transforms into a vibrant nightlife hub. With countless bars and live music venues, it’s the ideal spot for a night of fun and entertainment. Don’t miss popular spots like Sloppy Joe’s and The Green Parrot. Some of my favorites spots are Rick's, Irish Kevins, and Durty Harry's.

Rent Scooters

To explore Key West efficiently and with a sense of adventure, rent a scooter. It’s a fun and practical way to see the island and navigate its narrow streets. When we bring friends with us and need to rent a few extra scooters, we typically use Sunshine Scooters. They have great prices and the people who work there are super kind.

Friday and Saturday Night Freak Show on Mallory Square

Head to Mallory Square for the famous Sunset Celebration. On Friday and Saturday nights, the freak show adds an extra layer of entertainment with quirky and talented performers. It’s a Key West tradition you won’t want to miss. We typically head down two hours before sunset, walk the water and then head over to watch the freak show.

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach

For a small fee of $2 per person, you can enjoy one of the best beaches in Key West. Fort Zachary Taylor Beach offers clear waters, great snorkeling, and stunning views. It’s a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. You can even fish off of the rocks to the left of the beach. Great place to hangout for the day without breaking the bank.

Catamaran Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise is a must-do in Key West. I highly recommend Sebago for a memorable experience. Enjoy the beautiful sunset while sipping on a drink and sailing through the calm waters.

The Hemingway Home and Museum

Visit the Hemingway Home and Museum to delve into the history of one of Key West’s most famous residents. The charming house is filled with memorabilia, and don’t forget to say hi to the many adorable six-toed cats that call it home.

Perry's Hotel

When in Key West, a visit to The Perry Hotel on Stock Island is a must. This hidden gem is one of my new favorites as it offers a fantastic poolside experience that perfectly complements the island’s laid-back vibe. The hotel’s poolside bar is a highlight, serving delicious food that includes a must-try fish dip, an indulgent grilled cheese, and fresh oysters. Whether you’re looking to relax in the sun or take a refreshing dip, the pool area provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Duval Street. With attentive service and a tranquil setting, The Perry Hotel is an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy the best of Key West’s tropical atmosphere. Plus, being on Stock Island, it offers a slightly off-the-beaten-path experience, ensuring a more relaxed and intimate environment.
